Huashan Mountain Mysterious Grottoes

Just 12 km east of downtown Huangshan City, Huashan Mysterious Grottoes stands as China’s largest known ancient man-made grotto complex. The site features 36 caverns of varying sizes, all hand-carved in ancient times using techniques that remain unexplained today.

Unlike typical cave temples, these grottoes contain no murals, no Buddhist statues, and no inscriptions. Instead, visitors will find unusual stone pillars, nested chambers, and silent underground pools. Two grottoes even have entrances that open directly into the Xin'an River.

The purpose of these caves remains a mystery—no historical records mention them. This makes Huashan Mysterious Grottoes a must-visit for travelers interested in history, archaeology, and off-the-beaten-path attractions near the famous Yellow Mountain (Huangshan).
